For a singer, vocal cord surgery is a frightening prospect. To have someone in your corner who's been through it and come out the other side successfully is huge. Jon Bon Jovi was staring vocal fold medialization in the face, and lucky for him, another superstar had gone through the exact same procedure with the exact same doctor - and was back on the road performing. Bon Jovi turned to country superstar Shania Twain, who had already successfully undergone the procedure with Dr. Robert Sataloff - coincidentally, Bon Jovi's specialist - so he turned to her for guidance. "She's the only other one I've known that's ever had this surgery, with this doctor, and the only reason I found that out is because she reported it in the press,” Bon Jovi says. "She’s been my spirit sister in this,” he told "PEOPLE" of Twain. "Not only did she reassure me that it would be OK, but I think she also pulled my leg a little bit because she told me I'd be out there a lot sooner than I have been. She says, ‘Well, I told you that because I knew that you might back out otherwise.' And so, I couldn't wait to get the operation." Bon Jovi admits he had been experiencing vocal cord issues as far back as 2015, but didn't address them until a conversation with his wife Dorothea convinced him he had two options: fix the problem or retire. As for how things are now, two years after the surgery, Bon Jovi says the healing continues. He has a new album, "Forever," that was recorded post-surgery and is coming out June 7. But as far as hitting the road again? Bon Jovi's not ready for that yet. "I’m capable of singing. What I’m not necessarily capable of is two and a half hours a night, four nights a week - but I’m aspiring to get that back."
